When a child experiences the death of a loved one the emotion they feel is new and can cause behavioral, social, and psychological changes. This can be frightening to a child and create unexpected challenges for the family. New Hope recognizes that children do not grieve in the same way as adults, children often feel isolated and alone. To help address these concerns New Hope works to support families and recommends experiences for children and teens that help them develop peer relationships with other grieving kids.
At New Hope we endeavor to support grieving children by offering a model that focuses on strengthening the family so that your kids feel safe and confident that life will once again return to normal. Listed below are the programs we offer and some resources parents can use to support their grieving children.
Family Bereavement Camp – Our family camp provides an opportunity for entire families to share their grief and find support and a common language for talking about grief together.
New Hope Parents Workshop – No parent ever expects to be in the position of teaching their children about grief. Our Parent Workshop: Ways to Support Grieving Children & Teens will give you an understanding of how children grieve and how you can support them in their grief.
Adult Grief Support Groups – The best way parents can support their children in grief is by taking care of themselves. This is best done in a supportive environment with other grievers.
School-Based Grief Support Groups – New Hope offers a program to provide school-based grief groups in the Greater Long Beach Area. Check with your local school to learn if they are currently sponsoring a group.
Camps and Groups for Grieving Children & Teens
Pathways Volunteer Hospice – Along with providing hospice support, Pathways has an active Bereavement Program. One unique piece of this is a model that offers families the opportunity to come together for an evening support program where adults and children are then separated into age specific groups.
Comfort Zone Camp – CZC is a national organization that offers free weekend grief camps in Orange and Los Angeles Counties for children ages 7-17.
Camp Erin – The Moyer Foundation provides funding for the Camp Erin program. Their camps are sponsored by local bereavement agencies and service children ages 6-17. Camps are offered in Orange County and Los Angeles County.
