New Hope provides a number of programs to support grieving people of all ages on their journey of grief towards hope and healing. Most recently, New Hope began providing eight week grief support groups to elementary and middle school students in the Long Beach Unified School District. New Hope works with school counselors who identify students who are grieving the loss of a loved one, we then provide our services at no charge to the school.
“School resources are shrinking, and the need for grief support for our students is growing” said Terri Phelps, school counselor at Franklin Middle School. “The groups have helped with so many issues among grieving students, including behavior and attendance. I’m thankful to have New Hope’s assistance when it comes to students like Kara.* The seventh grader lost her older brother to suicide; two weeks later, her father was killed in a car accident. There are an awful lot of students in need of grief counseling,” Phelps says.
“This cause is very important to us,” said Dan Burell, Jersey Mike’s franchise owner. “Grief is an inevitable visitor into everyone’s life, but when it happens to a young person it’s important they receive the support, tools, and hope they need to move forward. We want to encourage all of our customers and New Hope supporters to come out and enjoy a sub to support New Hope,” Dan said.
