Since 2003 with support from the Miller Foundation New Hope has offered family weekend bereavement camps in Camp Ronald Mc Donald for Good Times. Nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times campsite is a few miles from the scenic town of Idyllwild.
The facilities, Apple Canyon Center, are designed specifically for our campers; enabling guests to enjoy the magic and beauty of a wondrous wooded hideaway while being only minutes away from comprehensive medical facilities and services. Surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land, the campsite provides majestic mountain views, open meadows and stately 100-year old pine trees. Families sleep in cabins, each are equipped with screen doors, carpeted floors, bunk beds, electricity, heating and have restrooms with shower facilities. It’s a perfect place to relax, have fun and regenerate your spirit.
Campers arrive Friday evening and leave early Sunday afternoon. New Hope Family Camps are designed for all types of families, not just the traditional. It’s for families who have experienced the death of a loved one, and each family member is encouraged to attend. In a safe and supportive environment families explore their loss with other families touched by grief.
Families learn to communicate and face their grief through groups led by trained facilitators that integrates peer support. Campers discover that they can live life in a changed world with a new relationship to their loved one who has died. Family Camp provides a balance of fun activities (sports, games, dance parties, art, etc.) with grief education & exercises age appropriate for each member of the family.
At camp families will find comfort, hope, and healing while making new friends with other families who are also grieving a death. The purpose is that each family member is individually strengthened and supported so that the entire family can move forward together on their journey of grief to a place of new normal.
Our facilitators are highly trained and compassionate volunteers who are there to support campers as they participate in activities and bond with one another. New Hope Directors oversee the facilitators throughout the entire weekend.
